Oh No Ono - Eggs
Wide-eyed, symphonic psychedelia: wall of sound principles by way of Brian Wilson or late period Beatles, given an epic synthetic makeover for another generation. This Danish quintet could be next after KAte Bush, Flaming Lips & MGMT in the line of kaleidoscopic pop ambition...

Hawk And A Hacksaw - Darkness At Noon
Incredible second album from Jeremy Barnes (Bablicon / Neutral Milk Hotel) and friends... this has a real east European folk feel, full of accordion, piano, strings and wild horns... imagine a cross between Calexico and Asa Chang & Junray and you're halfway there...

CD - Leaf - BAY43CD - £7.99Add to basket
Phelan Sheppard - Harps Old Master
Keiron Phelan and David Sheppard have previously worked together as State River Widening. This is one of those rare ambient albums that transports you somewhere else. It's also almost entirely (or appears to be) non-electronic. It puts me in mind of Kaada's 'Music For Moviebikers' but with a more rural feel, or Basil Kirchin's 'Abstractions Of The Industrial North'. Highly recommended.

Murcof - Remembranza
Back in stock, this 2005 album from Murcof. Glitchy electronica meets acoustic doom. Desolate, cinematic stuff.

Colleen - Golden Morning Breaks
Colleen works at the forefront of artists combining acoustic / organic instrumentation with electronica. 'Golden Morning Breaks' juxtaposes nostalgic atmospherics with a determinedly modern vision. 2005 album.

Triosk - The Headlight Serenade (SPECIAL EDITION)

Hawk And A Hacksaw - The Way The Wind Blows
Hawk And A Hacksaw are one of the pioneers of the fusion of east and west European folk, and this third album refines their sound still further. A riot of accordion, violin, percussion and horns, this is essential for fans of Calexico, Beirut or Black Ox Orkestar.

CD - Leaf - BAY51CD - £10.99Add to basket
Colleen - ... Et Les Boites A Musique
I really like this. As the title suggests, a (mini) album made from the sounds of music boxes. Listen to it all at once if you must: this sounds much better in segments, or with individual tracks in isolation. Very good on Leaf Records.

CD - Leaf - BAY53CD - £6.99Add to basket
Colleen - Les Ondes Silencieuses
This is Colleen in full acoustic / organic mode. The instrumentation is viola da gamba, classical guitar, clarinet, spinet and crystal glass: the sound classical and highly atmospheric. As ever Colleen is one step removed from everyone else and from her own back catalogue.

CD - Leaf - BAY57CD - £7.99Add to basket
Efterklang - Parades / Under Giant Trees
Efterklang's second full album mixes jazz, electronics and post rock with an enormous cast of guest musicians providing horns, choir, strings and more. This has the otherworldliness of Mum and the breadth of vision of Flaming Lips or Joanna Newsom. DOUBLE CD EDITION FEATURING 'UNDER GIANT TREES' EP.

Murcof - Cosmos
Six majestic tracks that see Murcof take a marked move towards modern classical, or so-called 'acoustic doom'. 'Cosmos' is comparable with Svarte Greiner or Deaf Center. Absolutely monumental stuff.

Nancy Elizabeth - Battle And Victory
Brit folk / singer-songwriter album by turns ethereal, richly arranged and traditional / roots-oriented. Shades of Maddy Prior / early Steeleye Span, Beth Orton and early '80s Cherry Red label.

CD - Leaf - BAY60CD - £6.99
Wildbirds & Peacedrums - Heartcore
The sound of this Swedish duo centres around the vocals of Mariam Wallentin and drums of Andreas Werliin. This is raw, percussive pop stacked with soul and blues, with Wallentin's vocals staring out starkly above everything. This really sounds like nothing else - an incredibly impressive debut!

CD - Leaf - BAY61CD - £10.99Add to basket
Essie Jain - We Made This Ourselves
Debut album for British-born, New York-based Esie Jain. Elegant chamber folk based around piano and guitar, sprinkled with strings and horns, and boasting a set of songs which grow and grow on you. If you like Nina Nastasia you need to check this out.

CD - Leaf - BAY62CD - £8.99
Volcano! - Paperwork
Second album by Chicago's Volcano, a riot of jagged guitars, careering rhythms & near falsetto vocals. Volcano are loosely in a US avant rock tradition, but skewered with an added sense of playfulness, coming over like Deerhoof or Shellac crossed with the Associates or Wild Beasts. Startling art-rock experimentation on Leaf records.

CD - Leaf - BAY63CD - £9.99
Hawk And A Hacksaw - Delivrance
Fourth album 'proper' from a Hawk And A Hacksaw, recorded in Budapest, Devon & Albuquerque, and continuing the team up with The Hun Hangar Ensemble that was begun with a limited edition EP in 2007. Their music is a kaleidescope of sound drawing together eastern European & middle eastern influence alongside traces of western psychedelic pop & a Morricone-esque sense of dynamics. Highly recommended as ever...

Essie Jain - The Inbetween
Second album by British born, New York based Essie Jain. This marks a fuller sound with songs revolving around a line up of piano, brass, strings, guitar, bass and drums all supporting one of the finest vocalists around. Think Nina Nastasia or PJ Harvey immersed in classic British folk rock like Fairport Convention. UK version on Leaf Records comes with two bonus tracks.

CD - Leaf - BAY66CD - £8.99
Murcof - The Versailles Sessions
Another truly great release from Murcof. Composed for the 'Les Grandes Eaux Nocturnes' festival in France, it is a set of pieces based on recordings of 17th century baroque instruments including harpsichord, viola da gamba, flute and violin. This bridges the gap between classical, acoustic doom and electronica. Stunning stuff on Leaf Records.

CD - Leaf - BAY67CD - £6.99Add to basket
Nancy Elizabeth - Wrought Iron
Following work with James Yorkston and Big Eyes Family Players, and a collaboration with Susumu Yokota, Nancy Elizabeth returns to her solo guise. Written and recorded in various remote and rural locations, 'Wrought Iron' at times feels aligned with classical composition as much as with folk and the singer-songwriter tradition. Built around piano and vocals, these songs (and a couple of instrumentals) are delicately layered and carefully constructed into a set of minimalist songwriting that should resonate with fans of Tiny Vipers, Essie Jain or Robert Wyatt.

Icy Demons - Miami Ice
Icy Demons revolve around Griffin Rodriguez of Bablicon. 'Miami Ice' has a strong 70's art rock'n'electronica flavour -think Neu, David Bowie, Talking Heads with some Latin & African influences coming in to play too. Guest appearances from Josh Abrams (Sam Prekop) & Jeff Parker (Tortoise).

CD - Leaf - BAY71CD - £8.99
Vladislav Delay - Tummaa
Vladislav Delay rarely stays in one place for long and 'Tummaa' sees him explore new directions again. Collaborating with Craig Armstrong (co-writer / Rhodes / piano) and saxophone / clarinet player Lucio Capece, this has got a strong acoustic / organic strand bound up with the electronic, creating a scarred, fractured series of tracks. Beautiful and strange at every turn.

Wildbirds & Peacedrums - Rivers
Wildbirds & Peacedrums' third album marks a startling new development in the band's sound. Compiling two EPs - 'Retina' and 'Iris' - the first half showcases a set featuring choral arrangements, while the second is characterized by their use of steelpan. Recorded and mixed in Reykjavik with Ben Frost and Valgeir Sigurdsson. Raw choral / percussive blues from a group who just keep pushing the boundaries...
