As a massive Bill Callahan/Smog fan I remember first buying a Drag City 12" of two dubs of his tracks, and when I say dubs I don't mean instrumentals, these were full on echo-decked reggae joints. I'd DJ with the record and got a great response from BC fans and people who just loved the dubbed out sounds so imagine my delight when about a year later the whole of the 'Dream River' album came out as a dub album. A total versioned excursion and although one of Bill's massive strengths is his lyricism this manages to pick out certain vocal lines and create a kind of almost smoked out cosmic groove with them. Musically too this picks out the melodies and blazes them out with into infinity. A wonderful record!
