A pandemic Record Store Day feels like the perfect time for the comfort of Josephine Foster’s ‘Graphic as a Star’. It’s an album that understands isolation. The lyrics come from Emily Dickinson’s evocative poems which are often about, and written in, solitude. The poems were a source of comfort and inspiration to Foster when she herself was writing the album in isolation in Spain. A cappella singing on ‘Wild Nights - Wild Nights!’ and birdsong on ‘What Shall I Do - It Whimpers So -’ is a reminder of how we become more attuned to sound when alone. With Josephine Foster’s uniquely stirring vocals, harmonica playing that Dylan would be proud of, and words from Dickinson, you’ll never be lonely.
