Memphis soul thrived under the labels Stax and Hi Records. When each left Memphis in the late 70s, Memphians turned to smaller indies making these funk, R&B and disco inspired gems hard to find in their own time and even luckier to come across now. Light in the Attic have given us many gifts this year, but this is perhaps the release I’m most thankful for.
From the title track (an awesome slice of boogie-inflected party soul) this comp is a stone cold killer. Cutting across Modern Soul, Boogie, Disco and R&B this zooms through a decade of absolute gems. Essential
