Jonny Greenwood’s score is a direct reflection of Lynne Ramsay’s brutal but tender film about hitman Joaquin Phoenix who is seeking abstract redemption for things in his past that are only ever vaguely alluded to. All the tracks are somewhat discordant but mixed in are sincere and sweet moments shown in the urgency of ‘Nausea’ as the drum machine ekes it way in and out of time and the delicate euphoria of the rising strings and fluttering guitar in ‘Tree Sings’. Can-esque and jazzy with giddy electronics this is by far one of my favourite albums to come out in recent years.
