Black Country, New Road is a new seven-piece: Charlie (Drums), Georgia (Violin), Isaac (Guitars/Vocals), Lewis (Saxophone), May (Synthesiser), Luke (Guitar) and Tyler (Bass). Latest stars from the burgeoning and famed Brixton Windmill scene, which also fostered the rise of contemporaries, black midi, Squid, Fat White Family and Shame. Debut single “Athens, France” was released in January 2019, on the highly respected Speedy Wunderground label, helmed by producer Dan Carey, who is also responsible for launching the careers of Kae Tempest and Natasha Khan (Bat For Lashes) amongst others. The bold, break-out single was followed by the anticipated “Sunglasses'' in July 2019, on the Thurston Moore affiliated label Blank Editions. Off the back of just these two singles, the band garnered massive tastemaker and early live success last year and there is now a huge appetite for what’s next. More recently they released a live collaboration with black midi for Live At The Windmill fundraiser on Bandcamp amongst a host of names including Kae Tempest, Fontaines D.C., Dan Carey's Scottbrains and more, Heralded as “one of the UK’s best new live acts” by The Guardian, who featured them in their Ones To Watch piece, and in their tips for 2019. Loud and Quiet featured the band as cover stars hailing them as “the best band in the world right now.” They also appeared in the NME100, Dork and DIY tips for 2020 as well as in The Observer’s Culture Tips for 2020 (one of only two music acts). Widespread UK and international press coverage includes The New York Times, The Times, NPR, The Fader, DIY, So Young, Paste, Stereogum, Brooklyn Vegan, Line of Best Fit, The 405, NME, Q Magazine, Mojo, Uncut and more. 2019 saw multiple, sold-out headline dates across the UK (including 1700 tickets in London) as well as in Europe. Other live highlights in 2019 also included supporting Fat White Family on their UK tour including a London date at the Kentish Town Forum and co-headlines with black midi, Squid and Goat Girl. Festival appearances in 2019 included Latitude, End of the Road, Visions, Midi, MENT Ljubljana, Sonic City, Future Days and SWN Festival and more. In 2020 the band were set to play renowned festivals Glastonbury and Primavera. Touring will resume in early 2021 with shows planned in the UK, Europe spanning 43 shows including Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, Manchester, Leeds, Brighton, London’s Electric Brixton as well in the US. Huge pick up and support in the UK at radio already; “Sunglasses” made the B-List on 6 Music and was supported by Tom Ravenscroft, Steve Lamacq, Gideon Coe, Iggy Pop and Huw Stephens on BBC Radio 1 to name a few. ‘Athen’s, France’ was also added to 6 Muisc’s C-List and received plays from Mary Anne Hobbs, Steve Lamacq, Iggy Pop and Tom Ravenscroft. Mary Anne Hobbs invited the band on for a Near Future session performing ‘Athen’s, France’ and ‘Sunglasses’ (performed there for the very first time) in March 2019; they also played at 2020’s 6 Music Festival at London’s Roundhouse. In the US, KEXP supported ‘Sunglasses’ making it their Song of the Day and featuring the track in their podcast. In France, national TV show, Echoes with Jehnny Beth will broadcast a pre-recorded live set. The show will also feature Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth-fame and Ed O’Brien of Radiohead.
